This Month’s Message From the Coach….
Our philosophy as a coaching staff is to keep our football players competing in athletics year-round. We want them to continue weight training and be involved in other sports. At a school our size, we do not want our athletes to “specialize” in only one sport. Stay active, stay strong, and keep competing, is what we feel will give our kids the competitive edge. As far as football is concerned, the skills kids learn from sports like basketball, wrestling, and baseball can be invaluable to their development as football players.
In the weight room, we have had some awesome achievements. First, freshman Morgan Supergan has set every record in the heavyweight division. The most impressive lifts are his 455lb. parallel squat and his 265lb. incline bench press. His 5-lift total is a whopping 1410 pounds! Others who have reached milestones are sophomores Joey Moulton, AJ Gandenberger, and Aaron Bell who have made it to the 1000 pound club in January. Freshmen Kevin Allen and Cole Acton are just a few pounds away from reaching 1000.
We were all excited to learn that senior lineman Luke Thornsbrough was asked to play in the East/West Shrine All-Star game in July. Luke is the only second football player selected from BHHS in the school’s history. Luke was a three-year all-conference, all-county performer. His senior season, he was named to the IHSFCA ALL-STATE TEAM. Luke is a fine example of what I believe is true; “good things happen to good people.” Luke has been one of the hardest workers in the program. We are all very proud of his recent awards because he really had to dedicate himself to earn them. I hope our younger players learn from Luke’s example and put in the work and always strive to be great.
As the winter sports wind down, many of our athletes are key contributors to the wrestling and basketball teams. Dakota Patton, Josh Kessler, Cruz Robinson, Alex Hahne, and Morgan Supergan have dominated on the wrestling mat. The wrestling team recently clinched the conference title and we hope that many wrestlers will make it to the state tournament. Senior quarterback Michael Grant is the lone senior on our young basketball team and the leading scorer. Junior Kicker Ian Park provides some scoring and sophomores Adam Baker and Krystian Ingram play regularly.
The future for our football program is very bright. Many sophomores and even freshmen have had to play vital roles on the varsity for the past three seasons. These players have gained valuable experience while competing at a high level. Making the playoffs in 2009 and winning a playoff game should help make the belief of our players even stronger. Another impressive aspect to our program is that our JV teams have had back-to-back winning records…and they have played without key young players who have had starting positions on the varsity team. Our freshmen teams have had winning records for the past three seasons and the 7th/8th grade team won their championship on the youth level.
As a coach, I am very proud of what our players are doing, and I am excited to see how much they will achieve in the near future.
